My Time In Sandton City, Johannesburg

On Sunday, the 26th of October, I visited Africa’s largest stadium and the fourth largest stadium in the world with the capacity of 94,736 - the FNB stadium, to watch enthusiastic cyclists take over Johannesburg for 97KM and 35KM at the Joburg Ride race.

The race is very popular with big sponsors and the number of participants exceeding ten thousand this year.

This is the stadium where Chris Brown hosted his first ever stadium tour and was able to sellout tickets in less than two hours! I’m one of Breezy’s fans, so yes, I went - a story for another day!

Now back to this past Sunday. I will try to cover the details for the whole trip. A lot of great things happened and I don’t think I’ll be able to write about it all, but I’ll try.

I left my hometown on Saturday afternoon with two of my colleagues as this was essentially a work trip. We sang, talked and played together the whole ride! I wore my comfy clothes because it’s a 3 and a 1/2-hour trip.

Before we left, we stopped for a slush puppy and other essentials. It wasn’t part of the plan, but before I knew it I was already the driver and drove over 170KM! My colleague covered the first 150KM distance and we used her car which is smooth on the road.

Upon our arrival in Sandton City, Gauteng Province, we checked in and went straight to our rooms after a few mishaps. I had to get some few images from my room window because the view was amazing! I do feel the photos don’t do it justice.

After about an hour we headed over to dinner, where I had a vegan burger with some chips. My colleague had Salmon and some salad (I had to get a photo because the representation was good and I appreciate good work). My vegan burger was not good at all, I had to abandon it.

We chilled for a bit at the restaurant before we went to freshen up and rest for the next day. I loved the view on my way to my room so I took this photo.

My colleague and I bumped into one of Kaizer Chief’s players, Ngcobo, and he was kind enough to stop for a photo! I’m a soccer fan and my team is Orlando Pirates in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), but I had to get this photo! Haha!

The next day was the big day! So we got ready, had breakfast to go at the hotel buffet and joined our cyclists at the FNB Stadium!

We parked about 2KM away from the entrance point and chilling area and had to walk all the way! It was packed. Below was my fit for the day.

We joined our team and I rode a bike.

After everyone was done riding in the day we stayed for a bit to rest up, ate and left for the hotel.

After some rest we met by the pool area where we chilled and I sipped on a strawberry daiquiri, non-alcohol - my favourite drink!

I met with one of my old friends who moved from my hometown to Sandton for work. We went on a small tour and had dinner together before we went back to the hotel where he met my colleagues at the restaurant. I loved the views from our mini tour.

My hotel room was a solid 8 out of 10 because the TV automatically came on around 6 or 7AM in the morning while I was still sleeping. I couldn’t sleep anymore because of the light, and it wouldn’t turn off. This happened on the final night and I needed this sleep.

My overall experience of the city is a 10. Sandton is the cleanest city I’ve ever seen with very kind people. I enjoyed it and hope to visit again.
